Boat and Ferry Travel
For Florida's private boaters, it's just a 50-mile skip to Bimini and another 80 miles to the Berries. Thrice weekly, the entertainment-rich Bimini Superfast cruise ship speeds between Miami and Resorts World on North Bimini. Although the ferry service is aimed primarily at guests of the large Resorts World timeshare complex on Bimini, you can book a one-way trip to avoid paying for a ferry/hotel package for just transportation, with or without a private cabin (port charges are in addition to the fare). Andros, with its daunting barrier reef, is more of a challenge to yachts, yet Fresh Creek Harbour offers a rewarding, tranquil setting and marina. Thrice weekly, Bahamas Ferries offers a three-hour, comfortable ferry with air-conditioning between Fresh Creek and Nassau. But getting from Nassau to other ports in these islands requires taking a slower local mail boat which, although an authentic experience, is devoid of creature comforts. Owing to weather and breakdowns, mail-boat services are often irregular and can leave you marooned. Check with the Potter's Cay Dockmaster's Office for the latest schedules.
